Set in the heart of gold mining country, Donaldson Dam offers anglers the lure of a different kind of gold – gold in the form of South Africa’s finest common carp. This exceptionally productive water of just over 20 acres has produced eight fish over 50lb, up to 57lb, and contains no fewer than twenty to twenty-five fish over 40lb, most of which are immaculate commons. Stocked in 1980, the original fish have thrived in Donaldson’s rich waters, growing at phenomenal rates.

The lake is lined by reedy margins and swims are mainly on one bank – each having a wooden jetty to take you clear of the reeds. The shower & toilet facilities are behind these swims

Fishing is possible to the far bank by using the boats available at each peg. In the far right hand corner of the lake is the island swim – reached via a permanently secured pontoon.

The island offers a choice of 3 excellent swims.

The flow through of water in the lake is strong, ensuring good quality water and providing a great environment for the carp. Crabs abound in this lake… that’s what helps to make the carp so big… so critically balanced rigs and tigers are often the order of the day. Gary Hoden, the main guide here, can advise on tactics if you require. He gets our vote as the ideal bailiff – quiet, friendly and knowledgeable – and most importantly there when you need him.

We believe the majority of carp anglers have a real chance of a personal best common at Donaldson – it’s so prolific for commons. Over 75% of clients re-book… it’s easy to see that this is an experience you’ll likely want to repeat.
